The Hidden Costs of a Mobile App Nobody Warns You About

The Quote Looked Reasonable. Then Launch Arrived.

Most mobile app budgets are planned around one number: the development cost. The design, the build, the testing — that's what gets quoted, approved, and tracked. What doesn't appear in the initial quote is everything that happens after the app is built. And in practice, that's where a significant portion of the total cost of ownership lives.

This isn't a criticism of developers who quote this way — development cost is what you asked for. But founders who haven't built an app before are often genuinely surprised by the ongoing costs of keeping one alive, useful, and well-reviewed. This article is the briefing you should have gotten before you started.

Founders and product managers planning their first mobile app, or anyone who got surprised by post-launch costs and wants to understand why. This is especially relevant for the Indian market where Android fragmentation and MIUI-style OS modifications create unique ongoing challenges.

The Store Costs Nobody Mentions in the Pitch

Google Play Developer account: $25 one-time. This one most people know. What they don't know is that Google's review process has gotten significantly stricter in 2024–2025 — apps with certain permissions (location, contacts, camera) now require a detailed policy declaration and sometimes a manual review. Budget for potential delays of 3–7 days on first submission and 1–3 days on updates.

Apple Developer Program: $99/year (approximately ₹8,300 at current rates). This is non-negotiable for any iOS distribution, including TestFlight. Miss the renewal and your app stops updating for all users — Apple doesn't send friendly reminders beyond the standard email. Set a calendar reminder.

App Store review roulette: Apple rejects apps. Not rarely — roughly 40% of first submissions get rejected for something. Budget for two to three submission cycles on the first release, each taking 24–48 hours. If you have a hard launch date, start App Store submission 2 weeks early.

OS Updates: The Annual Tax You Didn't Budget For

Every year, Apple releases a new iOS version. Every year, Google releases a new Android version. Every year, your app needs to be tested against both — and often updated, because APIs change, deprecated methods break, and new OS-level permissions require code changes.

iOS 17 changed how apps handle location permissions. Android 13 changed how notifications are granted. Android 14 changed background process limits. Each of these broke something in production apps that hadn't been touched since launch. Budget for a minimum of one developer sprint per year — roughly ₹40,000–₹80,000 depending on complexity — just to stay current with OS changes.

This is separate from feature development. It's maintenance tax. Every mobile app pays it. The ones that don't pay it start getting 1-star reviews: "App crashes on new phone" is almost always an unmaintained codebase on a new OS version.

Push Notification Deliverability in India — The MIUI Problem

This one catches nearly every Indian app team off guard. On stock Android, push notifications via Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) are reliable. On MIUI (Xiaomi/Redmi), ColorOS (Oppo/Realme), and Samsung's One UI — which together account for the majority of Android devices in India — aggressive battery optimisation kills background processes by default.

The result: your push notifications don't deliver to a large percentage of your users. Not because FCM failed, but because the device killed your app's background process before the notification could show. Your engagement metrics look low, your marketing team is confused, and the root cause is invisible.

The fix — manufacturer-specific notification channel configuration, foreground service architecture, and sometimes a fallback SMS layer — takes real engineering effort and ongoing testing across device profiles. Plan for it before launch, not after you've published your notification-heavy marketing campaign.

Backend Hosting: The Cost That Scales With You

Your app needs a backend. The backend needs servers. Servers cost money every month — and the cost grows as your user base grows, which is exactly what you want, but it needs to be in the plan.

A typical small Indian app backend running on a ₹2,000/month VPS (adequate for up to ~5,000 active users) seems reasonable. But add a database server, a media storage service (S3 or equivalent), a CDN for fast image delivery, a Redis instance for caching, and potentially an Elasticsearch instance for search — and you're looking at ₹8,000–₹20,000/month before you've reached meaningful scale.

At 50,000 active users, infrastructure costs for a typical app are ₹25,000–₹60,000/month. At 500,000 users, plan for ₹1.5–₹5 lakh/month. These numbers are approximate and depend heavily on your app's data model, but the order of magnitude is right. Anyone quoting you a flat infrastructure cost for an app "at any scale" is either wrong or not planning for your success.

Third-Party SDK Licensing Surprises

Many app features rely on third-party SDKs — mapping (Google Maps Platform), video calls (Agora, Daily), in-app chat (Stream, Sendbird), analytics (Mixpanel), and crash reporting (Sentry). Most have free tiers that work fine during development and for early users. Most have pricing that kicks in at exactly the scale where you're starting to feel momentum.

Google Maps Platform in particular surprises teams. The free tier covers 28,000 map loads per month. An app with 10,000 active users who open the map twice a day burns through that in under two days. Beyond the free tier, Maps Platform billing adds up quickly — some teams have woken up to $3,000–$5,000 monthly bills they weren't expecting because nobody read the pricing page carefully.

Before locking in any third-party SDK, run the pricing calculator against your realistic active user projections at 3 months, 12 months, and 24 months. Some SDKs that look free at 1,000 users become prohibitively expensive at 100,000.

The Real Total Cost of Ownership

Here's a realistic annual cost table for a mid-complexity Indian consumer app at moderate scale (50,000 active users), after the initial build is complete:
